What is surrogacy?
Surrogacy is a method of reproduction whereby a woman agrees to deliver a child for a contracted party. The word surrogate originates from Latin word 'surrogates' (substitution) - to act in the place of.
What are the types of surrogacy?
IVF surrogacy (gestational carrier) - full surrogate
This is where a woman carries a pregnancy created by the egg and sperm of a genetic couple. The carrier is not genetically related to the child.
Here, the surrogate is inseminated with sperm from the male partner of an infertile couple. The child that results is genetically related to the surrogate and to the male partner but not to the commissioning female partner.
To whom is surrogacy advised?
Natural or IVF surrogacy may be advised to patients with the following conditions:
•
Women having egg-producing ovaries, but no uterus; this could be because they have had a hysterectomy (removal of uterus) performed due to cancer, severe hemorrhage or ruptured womb, or they were born without a uterus. This is by far the most common indication for IVF surrogacy.
•
Women with malformed or damaged uterus and are incapable of carrying a pregnancy to term, may be recommended IVF surrogacy.
•
Women suffering from medical problems such as diabetes, heart and kidney diseases and in whom a pregnancy would be life threatening. However, their long-term prospect for health is good.
•
Women having repeated miscarriages and where investigations reveal no causes of the miscarriages, may be suggested IVF surrogacy.
Who monitors health and habits of surrogate mother during pregnancy to ensure well-being of both mother and child?
The surrogate is taken to the hospital for regular check-ups, as per the requirement of the gynecologist. The general health is medically monitored by our gynecologist. Timely check-ups & sonographies are done to see how she progresses. In some situations, the commissioning parents would want us to house the surrogate in the hospital, where a daily supervision of the surrogate is done.
What are the screening criteria for a surrogate?
We have very stringent and meticulous criteria for choosing a surrogate. The surrogates are between 21-35 years of age. They are married with children of their own. Detailed medical history, surgical history, personal history and family background is looked into. The surrogate and her partner are screened for infectious diseases like sexually transmitted diseases, Hepatitis B & C, HIV, and VDRL. Thalessemia screening is also done. Other basic blood and routine urine investigations are also done along with a detailed pelvic sonography. Surrogates without any history of congenital anomalies are only chosen. A detailed legal contract is then drawn along with the surrogate.
ABOUT OVUM DONORS
Our egg donor program offers one of the broadest and diverse egg donor databases in India.
We have very high standards for egg-donor screening. Besides genetic, medical, and sexually transmitted disease screening, potential egg donors also undergo an elaborate social and psychological screening which includes personality and attitude assessment, and an in-depth interview for motives and personal background. Only egg donors who have completed this process have been added to our list of anonymous egg donors.
